Mission Statement

Sunshine Day Nursery School is a mission of the Greenbush Reformed Church. Since April 23rd, 1979 our program has been committed to meeting the needs of young children and the families in our surrounding community.

Sunshine Day Nursery provides a quality nursery school experience in a loving and safe environment while promoting each child’s social, intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual development.

Being a mission of the church, Sunshine will strive to incorporate in its daily activities an open awareness of God’s presence in the lives of those Sunshine is responsible for and within the staff that carry out Sunshine’s vision, purpose, and goals.

Curriculum

A “Learn Through Play” Approach

Sunshine takes a learn through play approach to education. We currently use the Creative Curriculum in addition to our in-house curriculum.

The Creative Curriculum is designed to foster social/emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development and to enhance learning in literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts and technology. Within these areas of development, the curriculum includes 38 learning objectives that meet the New York State Early Learning Standards.

Our classrooms include a variety of interest areas such as blocks, dramatic play, toys and games, art, library, discovery, sensory, music and movement, cooking and technology. Throughout these areas, our teachers incorporate meaningful, age appropriate learning opportunities inspired by the interests of the children.

As a part of the curriculum, the preschoolers conduct project- based investigations, called “studies,” that focus on meaningful science and social studies topics and provide children with an opportunity to apply skills in literacy, math, the arts, and technology.

As always, we encourage and invite you to take part in your child’s education by visiting their classroom often and by offering learning opportunities at home such as our “At Home Extension Activity” suggestions.

Food Program

At Sunshine we understand that good nutrition not only supports growth and development but can also initiate and reinforce healthy eating habits for life.

Sunshine provides a full meal program at no additional cost. It is sponsored by the Child and Adult Care Food Program and includes a breakfast snack, lunch and an afternoon snack.

Our chef, “Mr. Jim”, thoughtfully plans each menu to include nutritious, fresh meals that expose the children to a variety of new foods while including some child favorites.

Sunshine purchases as many locally grown and produced products as possible in an effort to support local farms and businesses. Our milk is supplied by Meadow Brook Farms Dairy and is delivered fresh each week.

All meals are served family style in the classroom. Teachers join the children during mealtimes to facilitate self help skills and model appropriate table manners and socialization.
